•An “Imagine…” statement in which you put the reader in a scenario that leads to your topic
•A nicely introduced quote that fits with, leads to, or introduces your topic
•A story of some sort (stories tend to be more engaging than flat prose)
•Statistics that might alarm the reader or really catch his/her attention
 
Be thoughtful about your introduction so that it is on point and lays out where you will go with the paper (i.e., has a clear thesis so the reader knows what you aim to accomplish).
 
Also, be original with your introduction. Don’t be flat or dull such as “In this paper I am going to… blah, blah, blah.” Be more creative than that; utilize one of the strategies above or another strategy—perhaps an original poem or song lyrics… just be creative, and think outside the box—to really engage the reader. Make your introduction interesting so that it catches the reader’s attention and makes him/her eager to hear/learn more, to read on.
