TOPICS
Choose ONE of the FOUR research topics (SIX PAGES, 1,500 WORDS)
(1) Critically evaluate both the sociological and psychological perspectives as a multi disciplinary explanation to why women may kill. Explain and evaluate a range of theories, which look at the causes of female crime within society, both from an individual and an environmental perspective.
(2) Critically analyze the extent to which restorative justice practices can benefit victims. As well, do you think community punishment is more effective than imprisonment? To what extent is community punishment effective in reducing offending and tackling crime? What improvements could be made?
(3) Criminologists frequently argue that the ‘problem of crime’ is skewed so that the crimes of the powerful are virtually invisible. Who are the ‘powerful’ in this context and analyze why their crimes remain in the margins of public awareness.
(4) As prison populations rise to unprecedented levels, to what extent can it be argued that prisons work? Critically evaluate this statement in light of rising prison numbers in the United States and the steady increase in recidivism rates. Alternatively, do prisons work to any degree and if so, analyze how they are effective?
