1.1 Importance of presentation in business
With ever increasing development of marketing and advertising, the age of becoming hugely successful business solely depending on a good product is now long gone. Today, consumers are suffocated with options, whether it’s a life-decision-type of investment, say housing, or the slightest everyday commodities such as clothing. How to shine over competition is increasingly becoming more than just coming up with the leading product. For instance, for a company like Apple to be so successful around the world, their top notch technicians and cutting edge technical design wouldn’t suffice. It’s under the double influence of the great technology and user interactive experience they provide for their customers and the worldly marketing schemes they developed through new products presentations before appearing into the market. Steve Jobs is considered a marketing presentation genius in the business and that combines with their technology creates the miracle of Apple. So, for any average companies in terms of products, marketing and presenting products become even more important.
  1. Good business presentation helps establish and maintain a good brand image.
With so much competition in today’s business world, establishing a brand is of primary importance. With approximately the same quality or level of service, a shoe labeled Adidas or Nike can sell 10 times higher than shoes from some small factories in southeastern China. Brand is the guarantee of a minimum level of quality and service, and has already become a crucial criteria for consumers in today’s market. The building of a brand requires time and patience. However, for any start-ups, nothing is more important than effective public communication and presenting skills. The difference between a good publicist and bad one can cause a well-established brand to crumble immediately. Presentation in the sector of brand image building and maintaining mainly include two parts: everyday presentation and crisis presentation. Good everyday routine presentation is the foundation of a continuous success of a brand whereas crisis presentation can determine the life and death of a brand. In either case, good business presentation is indispensable in establish and maintain a good brand image.
  1. Good business presentation showcases leadership.
Leadership in business is not limited to the leader’s personal quality, but more importantly rather refers to the company’s status in the industry. For a leader, effective, visionary and decisive communication and presentation among his team is the key to leading the team to success. Likewise, any company’s public presentation, whether to specific clients or to the general public, is the gateway towards successful business.
  1. Good business presentation helps individuals to be better entities in business.
For most companies, presentation is covered by certain departments that not only come up with marketing schemes towards the general public, but more importantly makes specific plans for specific clients. That is the norm of today’s corporate world. However, in the near future, the key to success lies in effective and smooth communication not only on a inside-outside level, but on a whole, thorough and inside-out level. Everyone in the company needs to be good presenters, meaning they should be time-effective, highly productive in their daily communication with their colleagues. Good presentation then would become the strongest pulling force among team members and therefore help everyone in the team become better versions of themselves.
1.2 Qualities of a good presentation
What makes a good business presentation? While this question has been pondered by many people, there has never be any concluding answer to it. To different lines of business, different walks of life, the standard can vary significantly. However, from the perspective of purposes of any presentation, traits of universal qualities can also be found:
First off, a good presentation is a concise one. Conciseness is the common feature of any advertisement or other marketing forms. The reason is simple, time is the most valuable commodity for any client or customer. A point that can be get across in ten minutes would be an exhaustion if it were presented in one hour. In the business world, this is especially important.
Secondly, a presentation should be timely. As mentioned before, business presentation can mainly fall into two categories: the category of everyday presentation and the category of crisis presentation. Timing can help or destroy a presentation according to it correctness. For any bad situation a company finds itself in, any minute lost before a presentation is a disaster.
Thirdly, consistency should be the basic feature of any good presentation. Being consistent throughout the process of presentation is a matter concerning honesty and integrity. In today’s business environment, changes are everywhere and very difficult to respond to. In order to make consistent response, one has to make up a general direction before the whole packages gets launched. Presentation should be timely, but more importantly it should be direct against the matter that’s on hand. Any company that has a constantly changing attitude in their presentation would never win the trust of a client.
Last but not the least, good presentations always keep the final purpose on it mind. There can be a millions different approaches that a presentation can adopt, but 99% of them are not for the final purpose. All those that are not for the final goal should be get rid of. Only in this way can a presentation focus all of it energy and time and patience on the things it needs to get done, instead of doing all the right things that don’t lead to the right final result.
In all of these above qualities, one prerequisite is extremely important. In most presentation, the presenter is presenting their products, service and ideas through one instrument, their voice. Being vocal is the basic feature of any presentation, whether it’s a live one where the presenter is doing the presentation simultaneously as the audience is watching it or a previously recorded one. Pronunciation is an important factor under the sector of voice, especially for cross-lingual people. This paper takes on this aspect of business presentation and probes into the rapidly developing smart phone applications’ influence on pronunciation in business presentation.
1.3 Development of Smartphone Communication Application and M-learning
In the history of human communications, three major events are generally highlighted as the most important to its evolution: In 1876, the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell, in 1983, the development of the first cellular phones, and in the '90s, the rise of computers and the Internet. While, there is another major development worth noting that occurred relatively recently: the smartphone.
Among all mobile devices, smartphones are probably the most popular and widely used all over the world (Cui & Wang, 2008). Recently, smartphone as the representing one of the most significant technological and indeed cultural revolutions, it has changed the means how we socialize and communicate.
Therefore, colorful Applications, computer programs designed to run on smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices, have been created and fully display the advantages of Smartphone. Smartphone Communication Application (SCA) is one of them, it specific means applications for communicating. They possess the functions to send text message, voice message, cartoon sticker and even online audio or video calls. It enables users to chat for free and get immediate replies from chatting partner. E.g. Wechat, Line, Facebook Messenger, whatsapp, Skype, etc.
The strong tendency which is going to replace Short Message Service (SMS) and even the normal paid calling shows the popularity degree of SCAs. Due to these rapid advances in mobile phone technology, many researchers have started to do the related studies around the topic of Mobile learning.
Mobile learning refers to the use of mobile or wireless devices for the purpose of learning while on the move. Typical examples of the devices used for mobile learning include cell phones, smartphones, palmtops, and handheld computers; tablet PCs, laptops, and personal media players can also fall within this scope (Kukulska-Hulme & Traxler, 2005).This study is going to find out whether and how using SCAs has effects on Mahidol University undergraduate BBA students’ pronunciations in business presentation.
