While some men are savoring in their success as managers, directors or governors, most of us are battling hot in the field of career. Americans adore the virtue of dogged pursuit in individual fruition, regardless of whatever it may take, but the Europeans take a more moderate lifestyle which balances work and enjoyment of life more harmoniously. Chinese men, while holding fast to the Confucian philosophy, have opened their minds and unhesitatingly embraced the western culture.
Though Mao has blunder in his vision of “ The Great Leap” and has brought disastrous consequences to the land, the new leaders of China have more than compensated for his error and greatly boosted the national power by bulldozing the policy of market economy. China is universally acknowledged as a world power, and even the USA have to compromise in many big decisions. So, instead of flocking to abroad, many scholars are eager to come back and have a share of the big cake, but many are disillusioned as the key positions are already filled up, leaving little vacancies for them to flex their muscles. The bulk of the key positions are now in the hands of the middle aged men, who might hold on for another two decades, refusing to resign, rejecting new proposals, being recalcitrant to admonitions and rapacious till their dethronement.
Their unlucky peers and the ill-fated juniors bearing the tyranny of their boss and having no hope of promotion are painfully grappling with their problems: coping with the child’s study and career, dealing with his wife’s petulant temper, and coming to terms with his unpleasant position.
Many men have fought for years futilely against their destiny and ended up being bedridden with all sorts of debilitating diseases. It is apparent that fortitude alone is inadequate for a good life now; learning the art of living is essential to us all.
