Read the following excerpt from an article and write an essay. In your essay, you should explain whether or to what extent you agree with the author. Support your argument with reasons and relevant examples. Write your answer in 160-200 words.
Many of us, whatever our field of work, fear that showing uncertainty can damage our image — and we may compensate by expressing overconfidence in an attempt to win trust. But in many situations people are willing to trust those who can admit they don’t have a definitive answer. Recent studies found that communicating uncertainty and even admitting our mistakes is not harmful and can even be beneficial to trust worthiness. So, failure in “expertise” can be compensated by higher integrity and benevolence. When communicating uncertainty in a transparent way, we are perceived as less biased and willing to tell the truth.

The author argues that showing uncertainty, instead of expressing overconfidence, is a better way to gain trust.
Admittedly, people tend to show certainty out of vanity when they actually don’t have a definite answer, and it all boils down to a lack of real confidence. However, being frank is the very condition to stand as a trustworthy man, while uncertainty does not equal ignorance. Likewise, the ripple effect of showing uncertainty allows us to tap into candid exchanges and sow a sense of mutual trust. All this gives enough grounds to communicate uncertainty in a transparent way instead of being the slave of false confidence.

When asked about an issue or assigned a task, we tend to give a definite solution or an “I-can-make-it” answer, which will imply that we are capable and worth trust. In fact, it is mainly our high self-esteem that is at work here, making us afraid of damaging images or losing face due to an uncertain reply. For the author’s part, he deems that uncertainty will bring benefits to everyone, such as friendliness and honesty.
Personally, the author’s views are biased and uncertainty has its two sides. On the one hand, uncertainty will mean that language becomes vague and ambiguous, due to which the originally simple meaning may end up being roundabout. As a consequence, the reciprocal trust established in between might gradually vanish. But on the other hand, uncertain reply is also considered to be a genuine reaction to what people are ignorant of. For instance, people show their lack of knowledge by saying “I am not sure” or “I don’t know”, which unfortunately are thought to be a refusal or a perfunctory response occasionally.
Given the misunderstandings caused by uncertainty, attention should be placed on means of communication with others. It is vital that we should be sincere and not put insinuation in our remarks as Confucius once put it, “hold what you really know and tell what you do not know — this will lead to knowledge.”
