临 危 不 乱
during the british civil war in 1643, the parliamentarian commander, sir thomas fairfax, was at the head of his men as he galloped into wakefield, then held by royalist troops. so recklessly did he charge that having captured two royalists he suddenly found himself alone in the market place, facing a whole regiment of royalist foot. fairfax kept his nerve and began a conversation with his two captives as if he were simply passing the time of the day. when other officers approached the captive colonels neither man gave fairfax away. however, fairfax knew his identity would be discovered at any moment, so he leapt on his horse and rode through the startled royalist ranks and made good his escape. within minutes he had returned with his men, and had taken 1400 royalist prisoners, including the two colonels - for the second time.
