petite brides catherine de medici and mary tudor （ aka bloody mary ） both wore high heels to their royal weddings a century before french king louis xiv was born. but it was the diminutive king that made high-heeled shoes wildly popular among the men of his day. the fashion not only showed off the king's shapely calves, but it turned the monarch and members of his royal court into people others could literally looked up to. louis was so fanatical about the power height symbolised that he made it a crime to anyone other than the privileged classes to wear high-heeled footwear.
