Drawing specifically on the philosophers & phenomena we have read and discussed in class,
compose a double-spaced essay of 1200-1800 words answering one of the following questions:
1. Survey the different cultures we’ve read and discussed (and even others), explaining
how they differed regarding their attitudes toward death.
(Explain these beliefs and their differences analytically)
2. Explain why people may fear or embrace death.
3. Explain and analyze the philosophical strategies used to disempower the fear of
death.
Again, essays must be analytical. This is NOT a book report. You need to explain your position
and give sound reasons, supported by textual (or other reliable) evidence.
Essays must be typed, double spaced, in 12 point font. Essays must be your own material.
If you reference an author, you must say specifically where that author made that claim. You
must cite your sources, including page numbers when quoting authors. You must include a
comprehensive bibliography of everything referenced. Your bibliography does NOT count as
part of the required 1200-1800 words. Plagiarism means automatic failure, if not further punitive
action. Essays must be submitted on paper, in class. Late papers will suffer ½ letter grade per day
(a + or – increment).
