Foreign friends in China are often referred to as “Laowai”,which means a foreign guy or an old foreigner. Some people say it's an impolite name. but in my opinion, it's not of any bad sense at all.
Firstly. people with even the least knowledge of the Chinese language know that in Chinese the word “old” gives the listener a hint of respect, so “Laowai” is an acceptable good form of address. Secondly, as it's a call used only on informal occasions, if you're called "Laowai". it means the speaker thinks you can be regarded as a friend or a frequent visitor who can be treated in a casual way.Isn't it a friendly opinion about you? Nobody will call the British prime minister or American president a “Laowai”,for such a VIP cannot be looked on a close friend,However,as an ordinary tourist or visitor, you can be called a“Laowai”.The Chinese are humorous, and they tend to consider you to be a close friend who can be spoken to in an informal way.
In short,“Laowai”is a name which can be happily accepted.
