Despite the fact that China ranks the fourth in fresh water resource,with Brazil Russia and Canada being the top three, water shortage is still one of the biggest obstacles preventing China's economic development. The are as follows.
First of all, China's fresh water share per capita is among the lowest thirteen countries, which is only a quarter of the world average. Just think we're standing among the desert countries! Secondly, most of the water resource is in the south,while the north and the northwest are short of fresh water mainly due to the inadequate annual rainfall. Thirdly, a large percentage of the rivers and lakes
in Southeast China are polluted. Last but not least, the production of running water is energy consuming, while China has to import nearly half of the petroleum it needs.
And that's why we have no choice but to save every drop of water before the last drops are our tears.
