Set during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), Under the Hawthorn Tree was adapted from Ai Mi's 2007 online novel, which is based on a true story about a young city girl whith a condemned political background, Jing Qiu (Zhou Dongyu), who falls in love with a young man from a high-profile family, Lao San (Dou Xiao), when she goes to the countryside to be re-educated.
《山楂树之恋》改编自艾米2007年的网络小说，讲述了在文化大革命期间（1966年-1976年），年轻的城里姑娘静秋（周冬雨饰演）因为家庭成分不好下乡改造，遇到了高干子弟老三（窦骁饰演）并与之相恋的故事。
