Zhuzhou to Apply for "National Model City of Environmental Protection"

Zhuzhou City has tabled the plan of forging itself into a national model city of environmental protection within the term of the current government, Hunan ETV News reported.

据《经视新闻》报道,株洲市在七年前还挂着全国十大污染城市之一的牌子，在大刀阔斧地进行环境治理后，株洲市提出，要在本届政府的任期内创建全国环境保护的模范城市。

The city has been striving to enforce comprehensive environmental improvement for seven years since it was included among the top 10 most polluted cities in 2003. So far, 13 enterprises have been shut down and 20 been odered to undertake treatment within a prescribed time limit in Qingshuitang, a district in Zhuzhou city known for heavy metal pollution. All the projects concerning treatment of cadmium-contaminated ponds in the Qingshuitang District have been completed. More importantly, a project of treating heavy metal contaminated land involving an area of 6.47 square kilometers has been approved by relevant state ministries and commissions. From now on, industrial residues of all enterprises shall be recycled and end up in pollution-free landfill after treatment, according to the Deputy Mayor of Zhuzhou City Li Yijian.

株洲清水塘，这个湖南闻名的重金属污染区目前已经有十三家企业被关停，有二十家企业实施了限期治理。区域内所有水塘的隔污染治理工程全部完成，更为重要的是6.47平方公里重金属污染土地改进项目已经得到国家有关部委的批复。株洲市副市长李异建说，今后企业的废渣都必须循环使用，通过改造，最后达到无害化填埋。

Up till now, 274 of the 459 chimneys in the city area have been demolished, and the rest shall be pulled down by the end of next year.

截至目前株洲全市范围内的459根烟囱已经有274根基本被拆除完毕，剩余部分也将在明年年底之前全部拆除。

It is self-estimated that, Zhuzhou City has met 19 of the 26 qualifying standards set for national model cities of environmental protection.

株洲方面测算，在申报全国环境保护模范城市的26项指标当中，株洲市已经有19项达标了。
