Selling Leftover Peonies
Yu Xuanji
Heaving a sign in the wind,
the flower petals keep falling;
when vernal feelings have faded away,
again there comes the spring.
Is it because the price is high
that no one has inquired?
It seems the fragrance is so strong
that butterflies cannot approach!
Such crimson blossoms are only fit
to grow on palace grounds;
how could the emerald leaves
endure the dust of the road?
Once theyve been planted
In a royal garden,
The scions of nobility
will have no way to buy them.

Selling Wilted Peonies
Yu Xuanji
I sigh into the wind at how often the flowers fall;
Their tender feelings melt away unseen: another spring gone by.
It must be because their price is so high that no one wants them,
And because their scent is so strong that butterflies wont love them.
These red blooms are fit to grow only within the palace:
How can their jade-green leaves bear to be sullied by the dust of the road?
When, at last, their roots are transplanted to the Imperial Park,
Then, my dear prince, you will regret that they are no longer for sale.
