"the lion king" is back - this time in 3d, and the special effects make it worth watching again.
visually-enhanced rerelease of the classic disney film about a lion prince. with the voices of matthew broderick, james earl jones. directors: roger allers, rob minkoff (1:29). g: violence, including the death of a parent. at area theaters.
given that it was made in 1994, an entire generation of kids has now grown up watching "the lion king" from the couch. which, as the new, 3d re-release makes immediately clear, is a real shame.
granted, disney's motivations may be somewhat less than altruistic. this is, after all, a relatively cheap way to cash in on a premade product. but we'll leave our cynicism at the door (along with $18 for an adult ticket). everyone, young and old, will find something to appreciate in this shakespearean tale of a young lion discovering his rightful place in the world.
the birth of baby simba (jonathan taylor thomas) is a celebrated event in the african savannah, which welcomes him as the heir to his stern but beloved father, king mufasa (james earl jones).
the only animal who doesn't cheer simba's arrival is his uncle, scar (jeremy irons, wonderful). embittered at having to step aside, scar arranges for mufasa's demise and simba's banishment.
(now is a good time to note that this movie, like so many disney films, does not avert its gaze from tragedy. don't be fooled by the g rating: the circle of life, and death, is addressed with unvarnished bluntness.)
