Friendship

One family, which had emigrated from Japan and settled at the turn of the century near San Francisco, had established a business in which they grew roses and trucked them into San Francisco three mornings a week. The other family was a naturalized family from Switzerland who also marketed roses, and both families became modestly successful, as their roses were known in the markets of San Francisco for their long vase-life. For almost four decades the two families were neighbors, and the sons took over the farms, but then on December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Although the rest of the family members were Americans, the father of the Japanese family had never been naturalized. As they planned to leave the country, his neighbor made it clear that, if necessary, he would look after his friend's nursery. It was something each family had learned in church: Love thy neighbor as thyself.“You would do the same for us,” he told his Japanese friend. It was not long before the Japanese family was transported to a barren landscape in Canada. A full year went by. Then two. Then three. While the Japanese neighbors were in Canada, their friends worked in the greenhouses, the children worked before school and on Saturdays, and the father's work often stretched to 16 and 17 hours a day. And then one day, when the war in Europe had ended, the Japanese family packed up and boarded a train. They were going home. What would they find? The family was met at the train station by their neighbors, and when they got to their home, the whole Japanese family stared. There was the nursery, intact, scrubbed and shining in the sunlight — neat, prosperous and healthy. And the house was just as clean and welcoming as the nursery. And there on the dining room was one perfect red rosebud, just waiting to unfold — the gift of one neighbor to another.

Types of University Students

University students are different. They come from different parts of the country, speak various dialects, and follow their distinctive regional customs. However, a closer look at their purposes of learning at universitywill enable us to classify them roughly into three groups:those who learn out of instinct, those who learn for a promising future, and those who learn with no definite purposes.Firstly, there are a handful of students who learn without fatigue simply because they like to learn. They read a great deal of British and American novels because they are keenly interested in literature. Others sit in front of the computer screen, working on one new program after another all day and all night because they have discovered beauty in complicated signal patterns, and dream of becoming “Bill Gates” one day.

Secondly, there are job-oriented who work hard for a better career. It is arguable that the majority of university students fall into this category. After enrolling in the hottest specialty of the moment, they throw themselves into books, whether they like them or not,so as to absorb the most knowledge and to obtain all the available certificates, which may serve as a competitive edge in the cut-throat human resources market in four years’ time.Thirdly, there is a small fraction of students who learn without an aim. They take courses, finish assignments, enjoy life on campus, but lead a directionless life. They do not know what they are doing, nor what they are willing to do,nor what they will be doing after college. They are a group of “sleepers”。Students from all parts of the country gather in the same university. After four years, they part to continue their various lives. However, it is almost certain that those who learn out of instinct will be happy, those who learn with a determination will be professionally successful at least, and those who learn without an aim will end up with nothing.

Ode to Cigarettes

i hate being a non-smoker.it is so boring! it occurred to me the other day that i really would be a lot happier if i smoked.when someone says “good morning” to me,i cannot just ignore him or her and go have a smoke.in fact, i seldom get an extra break in my workday.i cannot stop what i’m doing to have a quick cigarette.i do not get to go outside and hang around talking to the other smokers at regular intervals on the pretense that i’m having nicotine fit.i’m not able to use nicotine as an excuse for my bad temper in the morning. if my nerves are jittery, i must have some sort of psychological problem. i cannot say it is because i have not had a cigarette. i can’t even go to the psychologist and pretend it is for “help to stop smoking.”

i do not have anything to hold in my hand to calm my nerves. i do not get the satisfaction of throwing my butts down for others to clean up. no one praises me for trying to quit —because i never smoked in the first place. i do not have an excuse to buy new furniture because i accidentally make a burn mark on something. the candles on my birthday cake smoke more than i do. i don’t have to sit in the smoking section at a restaurant —and so i am always in the family section with people who have their kids along. at the theater, i do not have a reason to go out to the lobby during intermissions. i never have an excuse to get out of the house and run to the store for a package of cigarettes.yes, smokers are much happier people.if it were just not for that nagging little question about cancer, i’d smoke too.

Truancy in Universities — an Analysis

students playing truant appears to be a common phenomenon in institutions of higher learning in this century.although most colleges and universities have strict regulations forbidding truancy, these regulations often prove less than understand what lures students to play truant despite possible punishment and to search for a solution to the problem, an analysis of the causes behind this phenomenon has been attempted.

a number of students play truant intentionally.after careful consideration, they decide to stay away from courses that they find outdated in content, dull in teaching material, and impractical in theory.

courses that are closely related to the students’ special fields may also fail to inspire enthusiasm and attract students to the classroom. if we regard these reasons as “legitimate”, we will nonetheless find illegitimate ones. a considerable number of students, who value money and “experience” above knowledge, work on part-time jobs when they should be attending classes.

this is especially widespread among those fourth-year students who are anxious to find a satisfying job. others play truant unintentionally. they are, or rather, believe they are obliged to do so. many students have the habit of staying up late and sleeping late. as a result, they miss the morning classes.a number of students among this group complain that since morning exercises at 6:30 rob them of their early-morning sweet dreams, they are so exhausted and sleepy at class time that they go back to catch up on their sleep.then, there are “student leaders” who are occupied with students union activities and other events. there “leaders” are usually so fully occupied that they can barely spare any time or energy for their study and determine that they have no other choice than to skip several classes every week.

Difference Between Cultures

i have always found the chinese to be a very gracious people. in particular, chinese frequently compliment foreign friends on their language skills, knowledge of chinese culture, professional accomplishments, and personal health.curiously, however, chinese are as loath to accept a complimentas they are eager to give one.

as many of my chinese friends have explained, this is a manifestation of the chinese virtue of modesty. i have noticed a difference, though, in the degree to which modesty is emphasized in the united states and china. in the us, we tend to place more emphasis on “seeking the truth from fact;” thus, americans tend to accept a compliment with gratitude. chinese, on the other hand, tend to reject the compliment, even when they know they deserve the credit or recognition which has been awarded them. i can imagine a chinese basketball fan meeting michael jordan of the chicago bulls. he might say, “mr. jordan, i am so happy to meet you. i just want to tell you, you are the best basketball player in the world; you’re the greatest!” to which jordan would probably respond, “thank you very much. i really appreciate it! i just do try to do my best every time i step on the court.” if an american met deng yaping, china’s premier pingpong player, he might say much the same thing: “ms. deng, you’re the best!” but as a chinese, deng would probably say, “no, i really don’t play all that well. you’re too much kind.” plainly, americans and chinese have different ways of responding to praise. ironically, many americans might consider ms. deng’s hypothetical response the less modest, because it is less truthful — and therefore less sincere. americans generally place sincerity above etiquette; genuine gratitude for the praise serves as a substitute for protestations of modesty. after all, in the words of one of my closest chinese friends, modesty taken to the extreme is arrogance.

Encouragement

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those onehour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. When all was arranged, the other asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse made the switch. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. The nurse said: “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”

April Showers Bring May Flowers

from the golden-tipped fields of mid-west america to the ancient kingdoms of verdant palestine, there is a happy truth to be shared with all who would take heed. in more recent times, this truth has been expressed as:april showers bring may flowers. this is a truth that promises light bursting from darkness, strength born from weakness and, if one dares to believe, life emerging from death. farmers all over the world know the importance and immutability of the seasons. they know that there is a season to plant and a season to harvest; everything must be done in its own time. although the rain pours down with the utmost relentlessness, ceasing all outdoor activities, the man of the field lifts his face to the heavens and smiles.despite the inconvenience,he knows that the rain provides the nourishment his crops need to grow and flourish.the torrential rains in the month of april, give rise to the glorious flowers in the month of may.but this ancient truth applies to more than the crops of the fields;it is an invaluable message of hope to all who experience tragedy in life.a dashed relationship with one can open up the doorto a brand new friendship with another.

a lost job here can provide the opportunity for a better job there.a broken dream can become the foundation of a wonderful future.everything has its this: overwhelming darkness may endure for a night, but it will never overcome the radiant light of the morning.when you are in a season of sorrow, hang in there, because a season of joy may be just around the corner...

Weakness or Strength

sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. take, for example, the story of one 10-year old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident. the boy began lessons with an old japanese judo master. the boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.

"sir, the boy finally said, shouldn't i be learning more moves?

"this is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know, the master replied. not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament. surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches.the third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match.

still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals. this time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. for a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time out. he was about to stop the match when his judo master intervened. "no, the judo master insisted, "let him continue." soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. instantly, the boy used his move to pin him.the boy had won the match and the tournament.he was the the way home, the boy and his judo master reviewed every move in each and every match.then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind. sir, how did i win the tournament with only one move? "you won for two reasons," the master answered.

"first, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm. the boy's biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.
