on 4 july 1940, hms foylebank was anchored off portland, england. the majority of her crew were at breakfast when unidentified aircraft were reported to the south. these were at first thought to be allied aircraft returning to base, but they turned out to be 26 of germany's most feared dive bombers intent on"getting" the foylebank.leading seaman jack marie was in charge of the starboard pom-pom. early in action, his left leg was shattered by a bomb, but he remained at his gun, and went on firing with hand-gear only when the ship's electric power failed. his courage bore him up till the end of the fight, when he fell by his gun and died

.＊一九四○年七月四日，英国皇家海军战舰福伊尔班克号停泊英格兰波特兰市附近。舰上大部分船员在吃早餐的时候，有报告说南方出现来历未明的飞机。大家以为那只是盟军飞机返回基地，不料却是二十六架德国最可怕的俯冲轰炸机，而且是以福伊尔班克号为目标。上等水兵杰克．玛里负责右舷的高射机关炮，开战后不久，左腿被炸弹炸得血肉模糊，但他坚守冈位，继续发炮，到船上电力中断，就改用全人工操作，凭着勇气，撑到战斗结束，这才倒在机关炮旁，一瞑不视。
